OMO advert

 1) What year was the advert produced?

1955

2) How were women represented in most adverts in the 1950s?

they were expected to be house wives and  women were expected to be the homemaker who got children and cared for the them

3) How does the heading message ('OMO makes whites bright') and typography promote the product? 

The heading promotes the product because it suggest that it will clean your white clothes so that they will glow, also the typography promotes the product because it is noticeable and is sans-serif which means its less traditional and more like modern.it also can suggest that its for middle class people and the product is very cheap. 

4) Analyse the mise-en-scene in the advert (CLAMPS): how is costume, make-up and placement of the model used to suggest women's role in society? 

the woman is wearing normal clothes a simple green dress just like a normal mother working at home. also hanging the white clothes , which shows that she likes and enjoying doing chores? which suggests they have to do household tasks and have to enjoy them too. otherwise the women has heavy make up on which is Another mise-en-scene that suggests for a woman to be beautiful and has to have  accessories and props and always have to look good for their husbands which suggests that men are controlling them and they always have to listen to the commands. 

5) Why is a picture of the product added to the bottom right of the advert?

they do that is people see what the actual product looks like and so they buy it and also read the positive things about it. 

6) What are the connotations of the chosen colours in this advert - red, white and blue?

they suggest the British and american flag which also this advert can be targeted specifically to them and the woman there at that time. also blue can suggests clean or pure and Yellow connotes something that is shiny or bright which follows there anchorage text “OMO makes whites”. 

7) How does the anchorage text use persuasive language to encourage the audience to buy the product? Give examples.

there is the repetition a lot of time of " clean , white and bright" which follows the slogan and "OMO makes whites brights".  so they use persuasive language  and use many different an positive things about it .


8) What representation of women can be found in this OMO advert? Make specific reference to the advert and discuss stereotypes.

its mostly an oppositional reading , the advert is sexist and telling women what to do and how to act, like doing chores and taking care of their children while men were supposed to be working or fighting in the war. its also showing how men were taking control of them and the world and they gave them no choice or an opinion and they couldn't vote too. also that women are objectified. 

9)What is the preferred reading for this advert - what did the producers of the advert want the audience to think in 1955?

the preferred writing and what the producer is trying to communicate with the audience is that women were treated like that and that they are told what to do and that they all have to be doing chores and they they should be happy and listen to that. also that they should be households and are enjoying doing their chores.  

10) What is the oppositional reading for this advert - how might a modern audience respond to this text and the representation of women here?

 a modern audience with think that its racist and sexist and it objectifies women and the audience wouldnt like that and they would argue with that now days and many people would argue and not much people would agree to it. its also unfair as also women nevwer got equal rights around 1955 years. women were treated differently and not in a good way , and in media were mentioned and house wives and negitive things . audience now wouldn't like any of this to be out in the world and that we all are equal and none should be treated differently.
