Apple Beats 1 Radio CSP

Background, industries and the impact of the internet

1) How have our music listening habits changed since 1960?

-More radio stations broadcasting (There are around 600 licensed radio stations in the country) and thousands of online broadcasters.

-Improved quality as radio moved from AM to FM and now to DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting).

-Many shows are downloadable on-demand (e.g. as podcasts), on a range of devices (e.g. using iPlayer on TV) and streaming-only ‘stations’ (e.g. Spotify ‘stations with no DJs')

2) When did Apple Beats 1 Radio launch and what is it?

Beats 1 is wholly owned by Apple and launched in 2015 as a free live streaming global 'always on' radio station. It claims to work across genres but often focuses on indie and rap music.

3) What is the difference between Beats 1 Radio, iTunes and Apple Music?

iTunes is all about media ownership, functioning as both a virtual record store and an efficient digital library for music and other media (movies, TV shows, etc) that you own personally.

4) Why was Apple so keen to enter the online music world and compete with Spotify, Deezer and Amazon Music (and others)?

To gain more control of the streaming market:  Apple already has a loyal and substantial consumer base through iTunes.  Apple Beats 1 is another method of keeping Apple customers away from competitors such as Spotify, Deezer, Amazon Music etc.

5) Why did Apple choose the three selected DJs for launch?

Each DJ was popular for different things and countries. Also established DJs who will bring their own fan base and DJs are well-known in the niche music genre and they are recruited for their knowledge and reputation.

6) How does the use of DJs differ from Spotify, Amazon Music and other streaming services?

Beats1 sells itself on the quality of the DJs and in this it is different to Spotify, Deezer and Amazon Music as it allows the audience to develop Personal Relationship (Blumler and Katz) with the DJs.

7) How does the content of the Julia Adenuga show differ from Radio 1?

Beats 1 demonstrates emerging, future developments in the media and provides an opportunity to study issues linked to ownership, globalisation and convergence.Content exclusive to Beats1.  Artists sign exclusivity deals with certain online providers.  This does influence what music DJs can play as artists who have signed up to Apple may get preference.

8) Why does Beats 1 radio give Apple the power to make or break new artists? Is this a good thing or a bad thing for the music industry?

I think its bad thing for the industry as they can ruin an artist is career easily even if they worked hard and end them as an artist while other people might like them and doesn't mean if they do not like them everyone does too. apple beats one can do that as they know everything about music and artists as also they have Julia Adenuga which they described her as she knows anything happening about London music. it also can be a good thing for the industry as they can get some good aritists famous and get them a career. also fan base of apple and Beats 1 will easily listen to them which will give them the power

9) Read the BBC feature on the launch of Apple Beats 1 Radio. Did the industry experts think it would be a success? Why?

Roy Martin (managing editor, Radio Today) thinks radio is all about music , however the apple beats 1 is not like most local radio stations, so it doesn't have news, travel, information and entertainment. It only has music so it might not get older age audience. he thinks its not as much a success as it does not have an impact on most of these topics. However, specialist music stations such as 1Xtra, Kiss, 6 Music will be more at risk.

10) Give arguments for and against the idea that Beats 1 will be a threat to traditional media industries (e.g. radio stations, record shops, online music retailers etc.)

I think Beats 1 is to help Radio because now radio is rarely used or listened to by anyone so they are trying to bring it back as Apple fans will listen and buy it , so it might be getting radio back to the media as it was an old product that people doesn't use. However,  it could be a threat to radio as it will only get the apple and Beats 1 fans on the radio and only attract their fans and get other radios down a level ,as it will encourage young audience so that  they listen to music whenever they want.

Audience

1) Who is the target audience for Beats1 and Julia Adenuga in particular? Refer to demographics and psychographics.

It will encourage and its targeted for young audience mostly so that they listen to music whenever they want and its a big entertainment for them as teenagers from ages 15-30. Also as fans of  Julia Adenuga there will be fans of her to watch as they have persnol relationships with DJs .

2) Why do people listen to Beats1? Which aspects of Blumler and Katz’s Uses and Gratifications theory relate to Beats 1 and its audience?

Diversion and Entertainment: music is a big entertainment and most reason why people would listen to Beats 1, its 24h global 'always on' music station.

Personal identity: music is a huge part of our identity. Niche genres and experts in grime / indie music/hip hop due to what they might of heard when they were younger as it  showed audience a small amount of music around the world

3) Can the audience actively interact with the Apple Beats 1 Radio or are they passive when listening? How? Give examples.

They can be active if they were listening to it from their devices as iPhone or lap tops etc so you can hear their recommended music and upload it to your playlist. Also You can then ‘Share’ these playlists with other users (as in Spotify) which allows you to be more of a Prosumer. But they can be passive if someone was listening to it in a car later they might ignore it too as they might not be paying much attention to it .

4) Is Apple Beats 1 aimed at a mass or niche audience? How does this differ to BBC Radio 1?

Apple Beats 1 is aimed at a niche audience as they mostly experts in grime , hip hop and indie music as it showed audience a small amount of music around the world. However,  BBC Radio 1 is seen as a  mainstream radio station, also as it targets big amount of audience and any as it gives entertainment and is for wider target audience cross the world ,showing the divers music played .

5) Do you think Apple Beats 1 radio will be popular with young audiences or are streaming services the future of audio-based media?

I think it will be popular with young audience as they only post music and recommendations and its targeted for young audience and its a big thing that most teenagers do now and it can become more popular from a friend to another and can get big at some point. However, streaming services can help attract and persuade young audience to get apple beats 1 and listen to their recommended music . In conclusion, i think both of them can help Apple Beats 1 radio and get it popular.
